The Lord's Prayer (Luke 11:1-4; Matthew 6:9-15)
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
A prayer of St. Benedict
Gracious and holy Father,
Grant us the intellect to understand you,
Reason to discern you, diligence to seek you,
Wisdom to find you, a spirit to know you,
A heart to meditate upon you.
May our ears hear you, may our eyes behold you,
And may our tongues proclaim you.
Give us the grace that our way of life may be pleasing to you,
That we may have the patience to wait for you,
And the perseverance to look for you .
Grant us a perfect end – your holy presence,
A blessed resurrection and life everlasting,
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
A Christian Confederate Soldier's Prayer
I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things.
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power that I might have the praise of men.
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for but got everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all people, most richly blessed.
Morning and evening prayers from Martin Luther:
We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have protected us through the night from all danger and harm. We ask you to preserve and keep us, this day also, from all sin and evil, that in all our thoughts, words, and deeds we may serve and please you. Into your hands we commend our bodies and souls and all that is ours. Let your holy angels have charge of us, that the wicked one have no power over us.
We give thanks to you, heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have this day so graciously protected us. We beg you to forgive us all our sins and the wrong which we have done. By your great mercy defend us from all the perils and dangers of this night. Into your hands we commend our bodies and souls, and all that is ours. Let your holy angels have charge of us, that the wicked one have no power over us.
The Jesus Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
From St. Teresa of Avila:
Let nothing trouble you,
let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
He who possesses God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.
